June
June has FLOWN by! We have been busy with science experiments, learning about BC joining Canada due to the promise of the CPR, practicing coding (both on paper and online), did a day of drumming (with grade 5s preforming for the school), went to the Apple Bowl and played at the spray park!
May
We are continuing on with Simple Machines and will start off on the month with morning of experimenting. We said "good bye" after 2 months of learning from our teacher candidate, Ms. Cull. We will miss her!
In math, we have been learning about perimeter and area. We are currently working on finding the perimeter of our name.
After we wrapped up learning about simple machines, force and friction we moved onto earth materials. We had a morning of exploring different stations and came up with a number of interesting questions to investigate. We had a real volcanologist come visit our classroom! She works in the North West Territories for DeBeers Diamond mine and brought in drill core samples to show us. We also went for a hike into Glen Canyon where were learned how the canyon was formed by glaciers and years of erosion. We noticed that most of the rocks visible were conglomerate sedimentary rock as we could see smaller rocks cemented into the walls of the canyon.

April
This has been a busy month! We have been lucky enough to have a teacher-candidate in our classroom (otherwise known as Ms. Cull)! She has been terrific and has taught the students about oral-story telling, adding sensory details to our stories, all about polygons and some super-duper dance moves! Stay tuned for the video!
March
S.T.E.M. Challenge: working together in groups of 3 or 4 students had to design, communicate their ideas and then answer the question: "How can we build the tallest tower with only two supplies?" They were challenged with using only tooth picks and modelling clay.
We went for our second and final ski at Telemark Cross-Country Ski area on Friday, March 3. We had a great day and I think everyone noticed how much they had improved over the course of the two lessons.

February
We kicked off the first day of February with Math Day. It was a day for the whole school to play math games. Our class rotated around 4 classrooms, practising our multiplication facts.
A super snowy day on Monday, February 6, made it hard to pass up playing outside! We went out as a class and made a path for a special tag game called "Fox and Geese". Students could only run around on the path and spokes of the wheel.
We have been working on learning about the 3 states of matter (solid, liquid and gas), as well as how they move through physical changes depending on how much heat is added or taken away. We had 1 morning where we observed not 1 or 2 but 7 different experiments!!! We have been busy!
We had our first (of two) cross country ski lessons up at Telemark. We were joined by Mrs. Hendrick's class and we had a fun day learning new skills!

January's Snowshoeing and Inuit Games Field Trip
With Mrs. Dojohn's class, we went on a field trip out into the local wilderness and snowshoed for an hour. We hiked more than 2 kms, and saw many signs of animals, such as grouse, deer, hare and bear.
After a quick lunch, we spent the afternoon having fun and learning about the games and habits of the Inuit. We played games called: Blanket Toss, Dog Sled Races, 4-way tug-of-war, Leg Wrestling, Neck Pull, Caribou Jump and many others!

January:
Our first S.T.E.M. class challenge of the month: with 50 straws, one muffin cup, 2 meters of masking tape and 25 minutes, build the strongest structure. Students are able to demonstrate their growing understand of how to make structures more stable by bracing them and using wider bases.
On January 20th, we had the best snow for creating forts and snowmen! We took our little buddies to the lower field and had some fun building with them.

December:
Experimenting in print making, our second skating trip, puzzling over pentomino puzzles and our class' collaborative gingerbread house entry, more art class and a few shots from the Christmas concert dress rehersal.
November:
Tic-Tac-Toe in P.E. and Button Blankets in the Ab Ed room
Empathy, Emotions and the Learning Pit
Art and Science Research Project
Ice Skating
Making a MILLION
As a class we made a MILLION, using tiny dots. We started with small 100 dot squares, then moved only to 1000 dot lines to make into a 10 000 dot square. In table groups we made 100 000 dot lines. After 10 were made, Mrs. Paynter taped them all together to show what a 1 000 000 dots looks like! It's bigger than we predicted!

Science Experiments #2 and #3
Saturday - Day 6
Peekaboo! Good morning Scarlet! This bean plant has made it all the way through the maze in 6 days! It's looking as tall as our unencumbered control variable (the plant that was free to grow as it pleased). Gravity beans are showing that they are changing their directions to have the roots grow down and the leaves grow up! |
Friday - Day 5
The scarlet runners have grown so much that it's time to put the second obstacle in. I did this when I arrived at school Friday morning, and by the afternoon the bean plant had already made it through the hole!!! Gravity plants are showing root growth going down, and leaves and stems moving up! Our first experiment's last day - plate 5 is looking terrible and has lots of mold. It's getting tossed. Plate 3 is looking fine, but is most likely ready for soil now. |
STEM - Challenge #2
In table teams, students were challenged to work together to build the tallest free standing structure in 20 minutes, using 50 Popsicle sticks and 2 meters of masking tape.
Seed Needs Experiment:
Day 5:
By the afternoon of day 5, plate 3's spinach sprouts had shed their seed pods:
In the morning of day 5, plate 3 looked like this:
1 yellow wax bean has sprouted!
Spinach seeds are showing bits of green.

Plate 5, still going strong, but no signs of green.
Two of the yellow wax bean seeds seem to be rotting.

Day 4
Day 2
Plates 3, 4, 5
Some spinach seeds have sprouted for plate 3.
No sprouting for plate 4.
Some scarlet runner beans and spinach beans have sprouted for plate 5.

STEM (Science, Technology/Teamwork, Engineering & Math)
In table teams, students had to work together to build the tallest tower out of 45 pipe cleaners in 15 minutes.
