This week we started an experiment to figure out what a seed needs and how they might adapt in different environments. We are seeing if temperature, water, light and oxygen affect if a seed will grow. We used bush beans, spinach and pea seeds.
Today marks the first day that students used their sketch-books-nature-journals. We will be using these on our nature walks both on and offsite to record what we observe over the entire school year. Students noted the date, weather, sunrise, sunset, moon phase and then practice drawing observations of nature that were brought into the classroom. Items that were drawn: yarrow, lavender, fennel, reed feather grass, hazel nuts, fir cones, pine cones, and shells, to name a few.
Ohhhhhhhhhh this was a challenging task! Students had to work in groups of 4 to stack 15 red cups in a tower. Sound easy? The catch was that they could not touch the cups! Using an elastic tied with 4 pieces of string, and being unable to touch the elastic as well, they had to solve this problem. Students worked on communication, growth mindset, not giving up, trying new things and working in collaboration. It was a great exercise and exciting to watch!
Today we started to explore and review place value using Base 10 blocks. Students built towers, counted how many unit blocks their towers made, and counted other student's towers.
